Healthy Cake Recipes

Most people know the benefits of eating healthy, such as a higher metabolism, less body fat, improved ability to build muscle, slimmer waist, and lowered risk of disease.

However, eating healthy can be particularly trying around the holidays or celebrations, as a number of delicious, unhealthy sweets and treats are practically begging you to indulge.

For your next party or get together, consider trying one of these great, healthy cake options:

Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

This is a fairly simple recipe that calls for the most basic of ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

Cake

  • 4-5 ripe bananas
  • ¾ cup cinnamon applesauce (no sugar added)
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1½ cups flour (or flour substitute if you’re gluten-free)
  • 3 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 2 egg whites, beaten
  • Frosting
    8 oz. cream cheese
  • 4 oz. cinnamon applesauce
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Directions: Mix the flour (or flour substitute), baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Mash the bananas in a separate bowl, and then add bananas, applesauce, and vanilla to the flour mixture.

Beat the egg whites until still peaks form. Then, fold the egg whites into the banana-flour mixture.

Pour the mixture into a baking pan, and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until slightly browned. While the cake is baking, make the frosting by whisking the cream cheese, applesauce, and vanilla extract together.

When the cake is out of the oven and completely cooled, add cream cheese and decorate to your liking.

Chocolate Zucchini Cake

Can you think of a better way to add vegetables to your diet than in the form of a chocolate cake?

Here’s what you’ll need to make this delicious treat:

  • 2 cups flour (or flour substitute if you’re gluten-free)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder, unsweetened
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup sugar (use a sugar substitute or sugar-free applesauce for added healthiness)
  • ¾ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 cups of shredded zucchini

Directions: Mix the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt) in one bowl, and the wet ingredients (eggs, sugar, unsweetened applesauce, coconut oil, vanilla and shredded zucchini) in another. Combine them once both are adequately mixed.

Pour the mixture into two greased pans, and bake at 325 degree for 45-60 minutes, depending upon the size of the pans. Let cool, then serve and enjoy!

Chocolate Banana Mousse Torte

This is a dessert that you can serve at even the swankiest of holiday parties. Or, make it for yourself and your family if you’re having a craving. The recipe calls for:

Crust

  • 2 cups walnut (or other nut of choice)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tbs. coconut oil
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • Mousse
    2 cups of avocado

  • 2/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tbs. peanut butter
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
