How Does Laser Hair Removal Actually Work

Laser Hair Removal

Amongst the many methods of removing unwanted hair, people are going to extremes that were once seen as daring and bizarre.

With some methods being more permanent than others, it appears that there is only one viable option to permanently remove hair from unwanted areas on your body.

This procedure is what’s known as laser hair removal which is a treatment that targets hair follicles and over time, removes them through a targeted source of laser light.

However, although the clue might be in the name, it is unknown to many how this actually works and what the complete process is under the microscope.

Across beauty salons around the world, the more standard and conventional methods of removing hair such as waxing, shaving and epilating are all procedures that can be done in the comfort of your own home as well as a beauty salon, however, the materials, equipment, time and pain that is spent enduring these processes can accumulate to much more than several sessions of quick, direct and pain free laser hair removal.

This therefore makes it easy to understand why this method is becoming increasingly popular and here is how it works.

Stage 1

It is important to understand how your hair is treated throughout the process and this starts with a consultation with a professional expert in this field who will explain everything to you.

Before starting, you will be made aware that laser hair removal can only take place during one of the three growth stages that all hair undergoes.

These are called Anagen, Catagen and Telogen and all represent different stages of which your hair growth is at.

The only stage in which laser hair removal can be carried out is the Anagen stage as this is where the hair follicle is actively growing.

This also makes it easier to understand why you must wait between 4 and 6 weeks to have another session as this allows time for the hair follicle to grow back.

Each session will require a longer period of time in-between each session as the procedure will slow down growth until it ultimately stops it completely.

Stage 2

After everything has been explained, you will undergo a patch test to ensure that your skin is able to cope with the laser machine and that it doesn’t cause any pain or damage to you.

This will also determine the amount of melanin in your skin which will be able to help determine the amount of sessions that you will need over the course of your treatment.

Once tested and there are no signs of any reaction, you will be able to begin your treatment within 24hours. The majority of people do not react to it so it is more than likely that you will be able to proceed with your treatment.

Stage 3

Within hair throughout your body, it contains a coloured pigment that gives your hair the colour that it is. This is called melanin and it is this that the laser is attracted to, providing a path for the laser beams to follow and target.

Once it has targeted the melanin and proceeded to the base of the hair follicle, the heat energy from the laser is released which damages the root of the hair preventing and gradually slowing down any regrowth.

This is generally a pain free process and depending on the size of the area you are planning on eradicating the hair from will determine the length of the procedure.

The machines used in the treatment are made with the latest technology in mind and often feature a vacuum assisted device that lifts the hair helping you get a more direct and effective treatment.

Stage 4

This process is then repeated over a course of a few months to enable a safe and effective treatment that is also cost effective for you.

Eventually, your targeted area will be free of hair and your treatment will be finished meaning that you will no longer experience any regrowth of hair in that area.
